ABILENE, TX – New information has been released by federal authorities about what occurred at Dyess Air Force Base before Erland Injerd escaped and was a fugitive for two weeks.
As first reported, on April 22, officers with the Abilene Police Department and Taylor County Deputies were dispatched to the Hampton Hills area, just southwest of Dyess AFB, to assist Dyess security personnel in searching for an armed suspect who had just jumped over the perimeter fence.
Weeks later the airman identified as Erland Injerd was captured by an FBI agent in Dallas. That agent wrote a complaint that was obtained by San Angelo LIVE!
The complaint begins by stating that the FBI agent was responsible for investigating distribution of illegal narcotics and assaults on a federal agent.
Injerd is charged with assault of a federal agent.
The agent stated that on April 22 a Senior Master Sergeant, a Master Sergeant, and a Security Forces Patrol Officer went to Injerd's home at around 3:30 p.m. to ask if he would surrender all of his personal firearms due to a threatening email that he had sent to his chain of command.
Injerd opened his front door and refused to give up his weapons. He got irate and began cursing at the three men. The officer then told Injerd to turn around and put his hands behind his back for failing to obey a lawful order.
Injerd refused and then struck a the officer in the face. The three then attempted to arrest Injerd but all of them ended up on the ground. Injerd then jammed his finger in the patrolman's eye and kicked the Senior Master Sergeant in the knee. Injerd allegedly knew that the sergeant had just had knee surgery.
Injerd's wife then opened the door enough for him to retreat back into the home. Extra law enforcement including the Abilene Police Department were called in but Injerd busted out a back window and escaped by scaling a fence and hiding into the woods.
The airman was on the run for weeks before being captured in the Dallas Metroplex.
He is charged with Evading Arrest, Assault on a Federal Officer, and being Absent Without Leave.
