Brady Police Investigate 'Unattended Death' and Aggravated Assault with Knife on Peace Officer

BRADY, TX - This morning, at around 2:10 a.m., the Brady Police Department responded to a suspicious person call near the Brady Dental Group office, located in the 700 block of South 17th St.

When officers arrived, they found 81-year-old Leo Baalhorn deceased with a gunshot wound to his head.

"Members from Brady's Emergency Services were summoned to the scene, but no lifesaving measures were possible," said Brady Police. "A weapon was recovered at the scene, along with other evidentiary items that initially point to the wound being self-inflicted."

Officials said Justice of the Peace Maggie Sawyer was summoned to the location, and an autopsy has been ordered for later this week.

"Until all facts/circumstances are known, we are considering this incident to be an unattended death and not a suicide or homicide," said Brady Police. "While we do not believe foul play in involved, nothing has been ruled out until more information becomes available."

In another incident, on Oct. 16, at approximately 2:10 a.m., Brady Police were notified about an intoxicated person threatening suicide in the 700 block of North Bridge Street.

"Upon arrival, officers made contact with 56-year-old Brady resident Antonio Garcia, who was holding a knife to his chest and threatening to harm himself or anyone who approached him," said police.

For about two hours, Garcia refused officer pleas to put the weapon down and speak to them.

"At several points during this situation, Garcia threatened to lunge or attack officers so that they would shoot him," said Brady Police.

At approximately 4:20 a.m., the distraught man finally threw his weapon down, and police took him into custody. Garcia was subsequently transported to the McCulloch County Sheriff's Office where he was booked and jailed pending arraignment by a magistrate.
