SAPD Arrests Man in Connection With Weekend Stabbing

SAN ANGELO, TX - San Angelo Police arrested a 25-year-old San Angelo man in connection to a stabbing incident that occurred near a downtown residence over the Labor Day Weekend.

Officer Tracy Gonzalez, public information officer for SAPD, said Julio Mendoza-Badillo has been charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon in connection to the stabbing of a 26-year-old San Angelo man that occurred on September 4, 2016 in the 400 block of W. Avenue C.

Gonzalez said officers were dispatched to the residence around 2:30 a.m. for the report of a stabbing, and when they arrived, officers located the victim outside the residence. The victim was bleeding and suffering from an apparent stab wound to his abdomen and minor cuts to his face. The victim was transported to Shannon Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries and later released.

"Subsequent to the investigation, police learned the victim and Mendoza-Badillo were involved in a physical altercation inside the residence," said Gonzalez. "The victim observed Mendoza-Badillo holding a knife during the altercation, but did not realize he had been stabbed until after Mendoza-Badillo fled the scene."

Mendoza-Badillo fled the residence prior to SAPD's arrival, but was interviewed several hours later by investigators. Mendoza-Badillo was charged following that interview and transported to the Tom Green County Jail.

The knife used in the assault was recovered near the scene, noted Gonzalez.

Detective Jake Russell is the lead investigator for this case.
