SAPD Arrests: Aggression Towards Officers, Drugs, Public Intoxication, Mischief and Warrants

Since our last update, 48 people made their way to the Tom Green County Jail, and last night, a few people kept San Angelo Police Officers on their toes.

Officer Tracy Gonzalez said, from 11 p.m. to just past 6 a.m., police arrested six people for drugs, public intoxication, mischief and outstanding warrants. Not to mention, one couple became argumentative with officers.

In the first arrest, Gonzalez said officers conducted a traffic stop on a gray 2008 Honda passenger car in the 600 block of West Avenue X at approximately 11:45 p.m.

“Once the vehicle stopped, both driver and passenger exited the vehicle and became argumentative with the officers,” Gonzalez said. “They also disregarded several orders from the officers and continued to walk away. Both were handcuffed for safety concerns during the traffic investigation.”

Gonzalez said once officers obtained consent to search the vehicle, a K9 Team responded and K9 Vader entered the vehicle.

“Vader showed an immediate alert to the center console,” she explained. “Subsequent to Vader’s alert, officers located a digital scale, commonly used in the distribution of illegal drugs, inside the car. Officers also located a clear plastic bag near the vehicle’s driver-side door that contained suspected narcotics. The bag’s contents field-tested positive for the presence of methamphetamine.

Police identified the driver as 33-year-old Diego Sanchez. He was charged with Felony 2 Possession of a Controlled Substance. Also, officers identified the passenger as 19-year-old Surena Rojas. She was charged with Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Both were transported to the Tom Green County Jail. This marked the fourth arrest for Sanchez, and the third for Rojas, in Tom Green County.

In the next case, Officer Gonzalez said officers, at around 2:08 a.m., responded to the Staybridge Suites, 1355 Knickerbocker, for the report of unwanted subjects.

“Two subjects, 28-year-old Jacob Padilla and 31-year-old Javier Gonzalez Jr., were located,” said Gonzalez. “Padilla was arrested for Public Intoxication and Gonzalez was arrested for Class C Criminal Mischief for tampering with property around the hotel’s swimming pool area.”

This was Padilla’s first arrest and Gonzalez Jr.’s fourth in TGC.

For the next arrest, an officer, at 3:42 a.m., initiated a pedestrian stop near Monterrey and San Antonio Street. Gonzalez said, through a records search, the man was identified as 22-year-old Daniel Vela, who was found to have outstanding warrants out of Midland County.

“Vela was arrested and transported to the Tom Green County Jail,” Gonzalez noted.

This was Vela’s first arrest in TGC.

Finally, at around 6:13 a.m., officers were dispatched to the 300 block of West Avenue L for the report of an unknown problem. Officers located a subject outside and identified him as 33-year-old Joseph Enriquez.

“Enriquez was found to have outstanding warrants,” stated Officer Gonzalez. “Enriquez was arrested and transported to the Tom Green County Jail.”

This was Enriquez’s 17th arrest in TGC.

Overall, out of the 48 arrests in the past two days, 21 people had new complaints, two had both new complaints and warrants, and 25 people had outstanding warrants.

I wonder why the law enforcement officer initiated a pedestrian stop of this man, and did he have the right to detain him while he ran a warrant check?

Sigman, Fri, 07/15/2016 - 16:57

This man had outstanding warrants for his arrest out of Midland, TX. (SEE BELOW). I suspect that the officer making the stop did so as the suspect was out walking the street of San Angelo at"03:42AM" and the man possibly matched the description of the wanted person. For the safety of your community, I stand behind our Police Officers making stops of suspicious looking persons and especially those walking the streets at "03:42AM" in the morning. Is it a crime for an adult to walk the streets at 0:342 a.m.? The officer only knew about his warrants after he had detained him. Can a citizen be detained lawfully for "looking suspicious."

Sigman, Fri, 07/15/2016 - 19:15

"Is it a crime for an adult to walk the streets at 0:342 a.m.?" Ms. Mitchell, no it is not a crime to walk the streets at 0:342 a.m.! I am mystified by the fact that somehow you seem more concerned about the rights of this man, with warrants for his arrest, to roam around at this time of the morning vs the fact that he had outstanding warrants for violence! What point are you trying to make? An individual charged with assault causing bodily injury is arrested and you are questioning this? I guarantee you that if "YOU" were the victim in this case, you would be happy that he is off the streets now. If you feel uncomfortable about this man's arrest, then contact the City Attorney's Office and I'm sure they can address your concerns. I certainly hope that you do not feel remorse for this individual. Trust me, if the arresting officer violated this man's right's, the matter will be addressed and I'm quite sure that it will be made public. FYI, these type of arrest are not uncommon and with our new Police Chief, I would not be surprised to see more of them. Now, if you have an issue to address about this arrest, state so! "YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING"

Why would you refer to me as Ms? I never stated as to what my gender was in my post. I am very concerned with the rights of American citizens. Why would I not be? You do know that the knowledge of his warrants came after a check was made to see if this individual had any warrants. I never questioned why he was arrested. I was curious as to why he was questioned in the first place. Its a sad day for America when as a citizen we can not walk the streets, warrants or not and be detained by law enforcement officers, well meaning or not. I do not feel "remorse" for this individual, and I will not contact the City Attorney's office concerning this matter. If his Constitutional rights were violated, I am sure is lawyer will address that.

Say I was transporting a digital scale to my sister or someone that needed one for measuring spices for a recipe, does it mean if stopped I can be charged with Possession of Drug Paraphernalia? I am just curious how that works.

I totally agree that our PD needs to get all of these criminal offenders off the streets and I commend the SAPD for doing a good job of doing so. However, what concerns me is why our Judicial System does not act more aggressively in sentencing these criminal offenders. There seems to be a "revolving door" policy that permits putting these individuals right back on the streets before the arresting officers can complete their incident reports. We need to send a clear message to our Judges that the "status quo" is no longer acceptable! If they refuse to listen then we need to vote them out of office when elections come around. The recidivism rate for repeat offenders locally is extremely high and it needs to be addressed. Releasing them back to the streets only reinforces their belief that they can commit more crimes and get away with it. This is a nationwide problem and it just seems that no one really cares anymore. "km mitchell," since I am not sure of your "gender," I will just refer to you as "IT!" You stated "I am very concerned with the rights of American citizens." "Its a sad day for America when as a citizen we can not walk the streets, warrants or not and be detained by law enforcement officers, well meaning or not." Okay "RIGHTS MAN" tell us about an incident here in San Angelo,TX where someone's "RIGHTS" were recently violated by a Police Officer! Better yet, tell us of an incident where "YOUR RIGHTS" were violated by a San Angelo, TX Police Officer! What about the rights of "5" Police Officers just recently taken by sick assholes running throughout our communities just waiting to "prey" on someone? Come on, I'm asking you to explain this! Sadly, all you can say is "Is it a crime for an adult to walk the streets at 0:342 a.m.? The officer only knew about his warrants after he had detained him." Can a citizen be detained lawfully for "looking suspicious." Just so you will know, there is an element within the scope of their duties that allows they to question/detain suspicious persons. It is called "PROBABLE CAUSE." You might want to take some time to research this term. Law Enforcement Officers put on that uniform everyday and go out into these "battlezones" not knowing if they will come home or not and you know what? THEY DON'T WHINE ABOUT IT! I personally spent 8 years as a "Texas State Investigator" and it sickens the hell out of me when someone like you "WHINES" about whether or not this Police Officer was justified in the arrest of this scumbag! I pray that you never find yourself in a situation where some douche bag confronts you with the intent of harming you and no Police Officers are around to help you! Once again, 3 more Police Officers in Baton Rouge, LA who were trying to protect people like you were taken from their loved ones and those they swore to protect! Did these Police Officers violate someone's rights? "WHAT ABOUT THE RIGHT"S OF THE FALLEN POLICE OFFICERS TODAY"
