SAN ANGELO, TX — Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers responded to a major crash on US 277 south, near the Reece Road intersection, involving a trapped occupant. The dispatcher described the entrapment over the radio as the individual being "crushed under the vehicle." The initial call came in at 5:54 p.m.
Since the incident, US 277 has been at a standstill. Northbound traffic into San Angelo remains completely stopped. Southbound traffic is being diverted onto Reece Road, though it does not connect to an alternate route or destination. Eventually, volunteer firefighters cleared one lane, allowing vehicles to proceed slowly in alternating directions.
Upon arriving at the crash scene, our team witnessed an ambulance heading back toward San Angelo with lights and sirens activated. As first responders lifted the vehicle to extricate the trapped occupant, we observed EMS personnel loading an empty gurney back into the ambulance.

It appears the crash involved at least two vehicles. A total of three tow trucks where present at the scene. One vehicle was a Chevy Blazer, which first responders focused more heavily on. The second vehicle, a black passenger SUV, seems to have hit the Blazer head-on in a high-speed collision as its front end was badly damaged. The black SUV ended up beyond the borrow ditch on the side of the roadway.
Meanwhile, DPS troopers are conducting a thorough crash investigation. They were observed marking the roadway with extensive orange spray paint, and using measuring tape, which typically indicates the incident resulted in serious bodily injury or death.
US 277 is slowly reopening, with traffic flowing a little better after Home Motors, the wrecking company, was permitted to remove the damaged vehicles by 7:50 p.m. However, backups extend north and south from the crash scene as far as the eye can see.
