SAN ANGELO, TX — A high-speed T-bone collision between two SUVs brought traffic to a standstill on US 87 at Fairview School Road just south of San Angelo Monday evening, with one driver trapped inside the wreckage and a child reported in one of the vehicles.
The wreck occurred around 6:30 p.m. when one SUV slammed into the driver’s side of the other. The impacted vehicle sustained catastrophic damage along its entire left side, while the striking SUV suffered heavy front-end destruction — classic signs of a severe broadside crash.
Scanner traffic revealed first responders were told the driver of the T-boned SUV was trapped and that a child in a car seat was inside one of the vehicles.
Firefighters and EMS quickly extricated the trapped driver. Remarkably, the scene was cleared and the highway fully reopened by 7:23 p.m. — less than an hour after the crash.
Texas DPS troopers did not rope off the intersection or conduct an extended crash reconstruction with measurements, indicating no fatalities and apparently no life-threatening injuries.
DPS has not released the names of those involved or the cause of the collision and said the investigation is ongoing.
Traffic was heavily backed up in both directions during the response, but the rapid clearance prevented a prolonged shutdown of the busy highway.
