SAN ANGELO, TX — Following a high-speed collision between two pickups, US 277 south is temporarily closed. The incident occurred on Monday evening around 6:30 p.m., leaving one pickup stranded in the middle of US 277 south, while the other ended up in the east side barrow ditch.
Witnesses at the scene reported that a northbound pickup, towing a utility trailer and traveling at highway speeds, collided with a gray late-model GMC pickup. The GMC was attempting to turn onto US 277 from Reece Road, a T-intersection on the west side of the highway, where the speed limit is 75 mph.
Based on the final positions of the vehicles, it seems the northbound pickup and trailer attempted to evade the GMC but ultimately hit the rear of the GMC as it entered the highway, making a left turn northbound from Reece Road. The pickup that attempted to evade hitting the left-turning GMC pickup ended up on the other side of the barrow ditch on the east side of the roadway.
Members of the Pecan Creek Volunteer Fire Department are assisting the Tom Green County Sheriff's Office in redirecting traffic from US 277 to Reece Road. Meanwhile, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is conducting the crash investigation. Preliminary findings suggest that the driver of the GMC may have failed to yield the right-of-way at the intersection before turning onto the major highway.
Thankfully, authorities have confirmed that there were no major injuries as a result of the collision. "It’s miraculous, but everyone walked away unscathed," an official stated.
The road is anticipated to reopen around 8:30 p.m.
The roadway was dry and the weather cloudy. It was still light outside when the crash happened.
