WINTERS, TX – A two-car crash on a rural highway Saturday night in Runnels County resulted in one death and the hospitalization of another.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, on July 19, 2023, at around 9:30 p.m., Texas DPS Troopers were dispatched to the intersection of State Highway 153 and Farm to Market Road 382 for the report of a major crash. This location is approximately 11 miles east of Winters. Upon arrival, the troopers discovered a 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe and a 2018 Hyundai Elantra that had crashed on the highway near the intersection.

Emergency crews were called to the location and transported the driver of the Tahoe, Charles Ray Myrick, 70, of Novice, to Shannon Medical Center with serious incapacitating injuries. He was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The driver of the Elantra, Michael John Castillo, 43, of Sweetwater, was pronounced dead at the scene by Runnels County Justice of the Peace David Sellers. He was also wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.
