PermalinkThe term barrio has different meanings depending on the country where it is used. In the United States, barrio usually means a Mexican slum contained in a larger municipality. I'm not sure the residents of the neighborhood mentioned in this article appreciate their neighborhood referred to as a slum.

Permalinkyou were a Mexican Johnny. So sorry ya'll are offended. We will quit saying that right now.
Are their any statues that we need to take down?
Any football or other sports teams that we need to change?
Any schools we need to rename?
Any other history of any sort that we need to forget about?
How about holidays? I know some of those are bugging you.
Any restaurants we need to avoid.
I know their is some business's and corporations we need to boycott.
Do we need to blow up Mount Rushmore ?
Just please go on social media Johnny and whine and even though you may be one of the few worrying we will change, alter, delete, forget about, ban,get outraged, disown , or try our best to mind someones else's business.
After all minority rules.

PermalinkSlum: an economically depressed neighborhood. No racial implication.
Ghetto: a neighborhood slum, but occupied predominantly by blacks.
Barrio: same as above, except predominantly occupied by Hispanics.
Have we become so culturally sensitive that even these mainstream descriptions of poverty need to abolished?

Permalink"Barrio" is not a pejorative term.
Merriam-Webster defines "barrio" as a Spanish-speaking quarter or neighborhood in a city or town in the U.S. especially in the Southwest
My father was raised in this area, and by no means felt any sense of shame, living among predominantly poor, but decent neighbors.
Most Latinos/Chicanos will recall "mi barrio" with fond memories, and pride. Sadly, all it takes is a few hypervigilant PC'ers to try and rob these sentiments from them, for the sake of a self appointed pat on the back.
