Semi Rolls in Crash, Closing U.S. 87 Northbound Tuesday Night

SAN ANGELO, TX — At 10 p.m. this evening, a major rollover accident involving a single truck tractor towing a semi-trailer flat bed caused both northbound lanes in the 7700 block of N US 87 near the Texas A&M research center to be closed.

The semi-truck was carrying roofing supplies when, for an unknown reason, rolled-over while traveling on the highway, Jose Rivera, Deputy Fire Chief for Grape Creek VFD, said. Only the driver of the semi was taken to Shannon Medical Center with minor injuries.

Rivera stated the patient was trapped inside the vehicle for 10 to 15 minutes because of the way the semi-truck rolled. Members of the Grape Creek VFD and a rescue crew from the San Angelo Fire Department were able to free the driver without incident

The primary concern for the first responders was the smoke coming from the truck tractor. The firefighters responded with water hoses to suppress the smoke build-up.

Traffic on U.S. 87 northbound was diverted to Grape Creek Rd. and has since been reopened. However, the clean-up required for the accident will be an all night operation, according to Rivera. The Texas Department of Transportation was requested to assist with traffic.

"Anytime we have rollover involving a semi-trucks in this condition it takes awhile to get the appropriate tools to flip it back on the right side," Rivera stated.

Grape Creek VFD and San Angelo Fire Department responded to the call. There were no other vehicles involved in the crash.
