A little after 11 a.m. today, a teenager crossing Sherwood Way on his bicycle was hit by a Toyota RAV4.
San Angelo Police Officer Brian Bylsma said he was dispatched to a major crash on Sherwood Way and Oxford, and learned the teenager was riding his bicycle across Sherwood Way on the crosswalk when the Toyota collided with his bike.
“The pedestrian was taken to the hospital by private vehicle to get checked,” Bylsma said. “He doesn’t appear to have any major injuries on him.”
The witnesses at the scene all confirmed traffic was stopped, and the pedestrian, approximately 15 years old, was crossing north to south. When the lights turned green, the Toyota RAV4 started forward. When it started forward, the driver ended up colliding with the cyclist.
Bylsma said the driver of the Toyota was issued a citation for failure to yield the right of way to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.
Comments
The propensity for drivers to ignore pedestrians in crosswalks in this city is not unusual. It is especially noticeable downtown when people cross streets in the crosswalk with the green light and walk signal. Vehicles turning right will almost run into the pedestrians. I've seen vehicles honk at drivers ahead of them stopped for people crossing. "Failure to yield the right of way" is a favorite maneuver.
