A 20-year-old Midland woman was killed in a crash on SH 349 just 50 yards south of the Midland city limits early Monday morning.
According to the Texas DPS, Kali Joanne Baze, 20, of Midland was southbound on SH 349 on a wet and rainy early Monday morning just before 1 a.m., driving a Jeep Liberty, when a truck tractor pulling a semi-trailer pulled out in front of her.
DPS said the truck was facing east in CR114 at the highway crossing and pulled out into the intersection in front of Baze. She didn’t stop or have time to take evasive maneuvers. The speed limit along this stretch of highway is 60 mph.
Baze’s Liberty was engulfed in flames as a result of the collision with the truck tractor’s semi-trailer.
Baze was pronounced dead by Midland County Justice of the Peace John W. Barton and her next-of-kin notified.
DPS said the truck tractor failed to yield the right-of-way at the stop sign at the intersection. The truck was a 2011 Kenworth driven by Jose Luis Alcarez Arana of Enid, Oklahoma.

How tragic, prayers to the family.
I wonder, what type of charges apply in a situation like this? If the truck driver had been under the influence, obviously some sort of manslaughter I'm sure. But what if he wasn't? Does he just get a ticket for failure to yield?
Obviously I'm not talking about morality here. Before anyone bashes, I'm not implying the guy isn't "punishing himself". Lord knows I would. I would find it hard to go on. I'm only curious about the legal aspects in a situation like this.
