UPDATED: Rollover Crash North of Grape Creek Critically Injures One Driver

A major crash between a Toyota Avalon and a GMC Acadia north of Grape Creek this afternoon critically injured the driver of the Avalon, DPS said. Trooper Carlos Diaz reports that the crash happened at 1:07 p.m.

Here is the crash reporting as it happened.

A major crash north of Grape Creek on U.S. 87 near Glass Road has traffic backed up for miles inbound to San Angelo. At the scene, a late model GMC Acadia is rolled-over on its roof and a Toyota Avalon experienced extensive damage.

The San Angelo EMS ambulance just left the scene without sirens or lights. Initial reports on the radio said that occupants were trapped inside the rolled-over Acadia.

Texas DPS, Tom Green County Sheriff’s Department, Grape Creek VFD, and San Angelo Fire Department are at the scene.

We will post updates as they happen.

Update 2:21 p.m.

DPS Trooper Carlos Diaz said that both drivers were already taken from the scene via ambulance before he arrived. He has recorded as much information from the scene as he can, but to complete the investigation he will be interviewing the drivers in the hospital. Until then, the cause of the crash remains under investigation.

There were no fatalities, he said.

Update 7:49 p.m.

According to investigator Corporal Carlos Diaz of the Texas DPS, this was a two-vehicle crash caused by one driver failing to yield the right-of-way at a yield sign.

A Red 2012 GMC Acadia SUV was traveling northbound on U.S. 87. A tan 1999 Toyota Avalon 4-Door was traveling southbound. The Acadia began to make a left turn on to Glass Road crossover (the road across the median of the four-lane divided highway).  The Acadia continued to turn on to Glass Road, traversing the southbound lanes. The driver of the Avalon took evasive action, but by the time it did, it was too late.

From the ensuing impact by the evading Avalon on the right passenger side of the Acada, the SUV hit a stop sign with its left side before rolling over onto its driver side facing west. The Avalon came to rest upright facing west on the west frontage road of U.S. 87.

The driver of the Acadia was issued a citation for failure to yield the right-of-way.

The driver of the Avalon, a 71-year-old female, was originally transported to Community Medical Center. However, her injuries were severe and she was moved to Shannon Medical Center.

The DPS said the driver of the Acadia, a 67-year-old female has non-incapacitating injuries.

Both drivers were wearing seatbelts.
