From Cats to Cockroaches: How Social Media Threatens the Viability of Local Restaurants

“Remove all feral cat crates,” is not exactly something a hungry person would like to see written on a health department notice slapped on the door of a San Angelo restaurant. Additionally, reading a Facebook post with an image of an insect in a plate of food served by a favorite local restaurant with derogatory comments attached from a server who admits to doing "things" to people's food make patrons rethink visiting that restaurant isn't good for business.

Image is almost everything in the restaurant business, and today, social media and reviews make or break the service industry, especially restaurants. As two derogatory posts spread across social media about two local eateries this week, local residents are concerned about what they'll find when they go out for a meal.

One social media post was a picture of a City of San Angelo Health Dept. notice on the front door of Lin’s Buffet, 4388 Sherwood Way. The orange 8.5" x 11" notice warned Lin's to "Remove all feral cat crates." Lin's is a Chinese food buffet, so the insinuation wasn't appetizing to say the least!

San Angelo LIVE! decided to find out what's taking place at Lin's.

Sandra Villarreal, director of Health Services, insisted that inspectors did not shut Lin’s down.

“The inspector went by just to check on them and there was a sign on the door that said ‘closed for remodeling,’” she said.

Villarreal also stated that the inspector walked around the premises and “noticed an abundance of cats” and crates, which prompted him to leave the note that stated, “If you plan on re-opening, you must contact the Health Department before any work is done,” with “Remove all feral cat crates,” scribbled at the bottom.

“We have not spoken to the owner. The owner has not called us back,” Villarreal added. However, Tim Condon, who is the head of the San Angelo Restaurant Association, commented on the situation.

“It’s always important to abide by health codes and any responsible restaurant owner or restaurateur is obligated to abide by local health codes,” he said.

According to some recent Facebook posts, it appears that another local restaurant may be breaking some health codes. A San Angelo woman posted a photo of a to-go plate of food purchased from Bonsai Garden, 1801 Knickerbocker Rd. The photo depicts what appears to be a cockroach in the rice. The caption reads, “This is what we found in our food from Bonsai Garden today, a cockroach.”

The Health Department has also seen this post. Villarreal said, “We got a Facebook posting from someone and I just forwarded it to the inspector and he is supposed to go and check things out.”

She also added that is how they handle any complaint that they receive about an establishment.

Condon, who owns the Lonestar Cheeseburger trailer outside of Eskimo Hut, at W. Beauregard and S. Abe St. claimed that cockroaches in restaurants should not be a common problem.

“If restaurants have pest issues, they need to be addressed instantaneously,” he said. “I pretty much have an outdoor kitchen and we don’t have any issues in any way, shape, or form. Cleanliness is always something that should be a priority in a professional kitchen. If cleanliness is a priority, pest issues should not be a problem.”

Instead of addressing the problem, an employee of Bonsai Garden, Michael Anthony Andros, who was made aware of this Facebook post, chose to respond with a post of his own. He wrote, “On behalf of myself and Bonsai…I apologize to everyone who is heartbroken about the roach that was found today. I guess I wasn’t there today, but Bonsai does have fresh food every day and I am sure it was an accident; or who knows, it could have been on purpose…If you think that’s bad, you should see what I do to your food if you want everything and drink 10 Diet Cokes in 5 minutes and tip $1.50, or don’t tip at all…You tip bad, you get f***ed, and if your service is bad, and the server isn’t busy, f**k that server; but when busy, have f***ing patience or stay your a** at home. Bonsai n***er…Eat it or beat it.”

[[{"fid":"16963","view_mode":"preview","type":"media","attributes":{"alt":"(Contributed photo\\Facebook)","height":"1404","width":"1242","class":"media-element file-preview"}}]]

Bonsai would not comment on the situation; however, Condon stated, “That’s not what we strive for in the restaurant business. It’s a matter of integrity as we are in the service business. Anyone in one of my restaurants would be immediately fired for that type of behavior.”

According to a follow up Facebook post made by Andros, it appears that he was terminated.

[[{"fid":"16970","view_mode":"preview","type":"media","attributes":{"alt":"(Contributed photo\\Facebook)","height":"1149","width":"1242","class":"media-element file-preview imgbody"}}]]

He wrote,"To all my people out there that has showed me love at work and would request me because of my service...due to the post I posted yesterday and the stupid miserable b***h a**, c**k f**ks that made my post an issue with Go San Angelo, KLST, and media...my job had to let me go. It's nothing personal. It's all business. Holidays coming up and I have 5 boys...my luck, huh. Well I apologize to all my customers. If you're my Facebook friend, my posts are 95% joking around, but that's San Angelo for you. One thing's for sure, 'imma' stay blessed. Reporters, if you are trying to get ahold of me...I'm at where I'm at...I'm 'mic dros baybae'...Bonsai, I love yall. Please share and everyone, tell me how yall feel about this issue."

If you are going to go through the trouble of censoring the foul language in your written text, you should probably do the same for the images by blacking out/greying/distorting the curse words. Seems counterproductive not to do so. Curse words that are misspelled so as to get around word filter programs does not make them any less vulgar. Due Diligence.

I don't mean the food , this whole article is poor journalism , let the kooks stay on face book .

Actually, a lot of people asked us to look into this situation, so we did and this is what we found. You always have the option to not read it, but we are giving our readers what they asked for.

I wish the story had carried a little more detail. I was so mad at Facebook posts last night that I called the Tom Green County Health Department this morning and found out that the TGCHD DID NOT CLOSE LIN'S, and another notice on the building said that they were remodeling and would "reopen soon". According to the person I spoke to at the Health Department, any plans to remodel or extensive remodeling must be inspected by them (state law, I'm assuming). The "CAT CRATES" MAY HAVE BEEN LIVE ANIMAL TRAPS. Remember, a while back, a now-closed Mexican restaurant on Knickerbocker Rd was attempting to get rid of a plethora of feral cats. If you don't like a restaurants food, just don't eat there, don't try to destroy it for others!

The story specifically states that the Health Department did not close Lin's down. I reported exactly what the Health Department told me. Thank you.

Yep, you are correct. I had missed a lot of the story because it was buried among ads and posts, etc. Yes, you did include the information. Actually, I fault the inspector for that notice. Making anything like that public is just asking for mean spirited people to start something. Again, your story did contain all the info. Since it was sent to me in a noreply email, I couldn't respond via email, hence this post. Personally, I think you people cover stuff a lot better than the other media in town. Just saying!

Melinda,

This will be our last explanation, so we want to make a few things clear. First, here is what it means to slander:

"The action or crime of making a false spoken statement damaging to a person's reputation."

This story is not about attacking local restaurants, nor did we make false claims. If you read the story, you would realize it's about how social media plays a role in everything we do today. These posts went around non-stop on Facebook, and readers brought them to our attention. The damage was done before it, and that would be the same if we had chosen not to write this.

Brittany simply set out to find out what people wanted to know, and that's what happened to Lin's, and what happens when an employee goes online and publicly states that he "messes" with people's food. If you read the story, you will find that Lin's was not closed down, which she verified; nor did its closing have to do with cats. As for the employee who wrote on his Facebook page, he did not have his settings on private, which is why so many people were able to see his damaging words. This story was not about knocking Bonsai's, but rather about what happens when people post things on Facebook that can have dire circumstances.

Hopefully, it will be a learning lesson to people to be careful what they post. A roach in a bowl of food is not a story, but when an employee goes and announces on social media that he "messes" with people's food, that's a cause of concern for the public. That's why the story was written.

Have a good day,

Brandy Ramirez

So this guy Michael Anthony Andros admits on Facebook to messing with peoples food at work, subsequently gets fired for said post, and is now upset at everybody else and states that he was "just joking around?"

What a dolt.

And Melinda Flores: That would be libel...not slander. And San Angelo Live did not libel the restaurants. They did some investigative reporting. Something I wish a lot more media outlets would do more of.

I am totally not feeling like picking up 60 dollars of lunch there on a weekly basis like we have been. ya feel me?? Geeeeeeno.......

Maybe San Angelo Live can keep us posted on where this spaz is working in the future so we can avoid going to those places too.....
And as for Lin's, this could be the very reason that every time I ate there, I left feeling the need to purr and rub up against random peoples legs.........

woodsy, Fri, 12/18/2015 - 12:20

I do not like either place, Bonsai Garden was filthy the last time I patronized it in 2014. The walls and baseboards were covered in dirt and grime. The grill was dirty before the chef even got there but he just turned it on and dumped our food on the dirty grill. There was rice all over the table from the previous patrons. Chair was sticky and an overturned glass of soda was under the table. It was July and the air conditioner was broken so they had a big fan blowing on the table. The fan was on so high a woman with long hair had her hair blowing all over and falling out and blowing onto the grill and you guessed it. It was in our food. As far as Lin’s Buffet I walked in there and the food had a bad and indescribable odor about it so I left without eating. No idea what kind of meat that was but if they are killing cats and serving them to San Angelo someone needs to find them and kick their rear ends.

Isn't this one of many examples of SALIVE "following", and not "leading" the news? Besides that, roaches are good sources of protein.........get a grip.............there#s already tons of insect fragments and other treats in all different kinds of foods we buy from the grocery stores and consume a the cleanest restaurants we know of......pass the bugs with exra hot sauce, please.........
