SAN ANGELO, TX — Tom Green County Sheriff J. Nick Hanna issued a Labor Day message Friday honoring American workers and urging residents to celebrate the holiday weekend safely.
Labor Day, observed on the first Monday in September, was created by the labor movement and is dedicated to American workers’ social and economic achievements, Hanna said. It is a yearly national tribute to workers’ contributions to the country’s strength, prosperity and well-being.
The nation pays tribute on the holiday to the American worker, whom Hanna called the creator of much of the nation’s strength, freedom, and leadership.
“On Labor Day, we honor the hard work of all those who drive our economy, provide for our families, and help ensure the success and well-being of our nation,” Hanna said.
Because many workers have the Monday off, the holiday is traditionally viewed as the last big weekend of summer. Hanna said it is a common time for a final trip to the lake or river, a backyard barbecue, or a last campout of the season.
Hanna advised anyone traveling to follow traffic laws, never drive under the influence of drugs and alcohol, and stay mindful of surroundings.
For swimming, boating or floating, he recommended wearing a life jacket, following boating safety laws, swimming with a buddy, keeping children in sight and never operating a watercraft while intoxicated.
Hanna directed readers seeking more information on Labor Day’s history to the U.S. Department of Labor.
