Missing Newborn Heifer Returned

SAN ANGELO, TX — A newborn Mini Highland heifer reported stolen from a gated ranch on Reece Road yesterday was returned early Tuesday morning, according to the animal’s owner.

The calf was dropped off at a gate on the property between 6 a.m. and 6:40 a.m., the owner said. The gate was not the same one from which the calf was taken.

The heifer had been missing since late Monday morning. The owner said she and others searched for the calf until about 2:30 a.m.

According to the owner, the calf was dehydrated when it was recovered and is now receiving additional care. The calf was reunited with its mother.

The owner also said the mother cow appeared to be drugged and began acting normally again around 5:30 p.m. Monday, after appearing lethargic earlier in the day.

Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the case. Authorities are reviewing fresh tire tracks and camera footage from the area, according to the owner.

The calf was born Sunday morning and was about 24 hours old when it was reported missing. The owner had previously estimated the calf’s value at approximately $15,000.

The investigation remains ongoing.
