Heavy Rain & Flooding Possible Saturday

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Residents across the Heartland and Hill Country regions are anticipating relief from the ongoing drought as meteorologists predict scattered thunderstorms to develop late this afternoon and evening. The storms, expected mainly southeast of a Brownwood to Brady to Junction line, carry the potential for severe weather, including very large hail and damaging winds.  Most of the Concho Valley will remain hot and dry. 

As the week progresses, the forecast indicates an increasing likelihood of more widespread showers and storms across West Central Texas, particularly over the weekend. These storms may bring pockets of heavy rainfall, potentially leading to brief flooding of low-lying areas and city streets. The main focus is on Saturday, with areas mainly east of an Abilene to San Angelo line expected to experience significant rainfall.

The best chance for rain will be Saturday into Saturday night.  While the primary concern remains localized heavy rainfall and the risk of flooding, the anticipated rainfall is viewed as beneficial for a region that has endured dry conditions in recent weeks. Rainfall amounts Friday night into Saturday night could exceed an inch in some locations, with minimal risk of severe weather though isolated thunderstorms are possible.

The rain is forecasted to taper off early Sunday morning as the upper trough moves eastward. Winds will shift back to the southeast and south on Monday as surface high pressure builds into East Texas. Temperatures are expected to gradually climb back into the 80s by Tuesday and Wednesday, with a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms returning later in the week as a weak cold front moves through.

Tonight and Beyond:

• Tonight: Increasing clouds with a low around 58°F. Northeast winds 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.

• Friday: A slight chance of showers between 1pm and 4pm, then a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 4pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 72°F. Northeast wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

• Friday Night: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 60°F. East wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

• Saturday: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. High near 65°F. East northeast wind 5 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

• Saturday Night: Showers and thunderstorms likely before 10pm, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm between 10pm and 1am, then a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1am. Cloudy, with a low around 48°F. North northeast wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
