SAN ANGELO, TX — The work on Veterans Memorial Bridge that spans Lake Nasworthy has come to a halt because the construction workers walked off the job over a week ago.
The bridge that, when fully open, is a four-lane short causeway connecting the city to San Angelo’s Mathis Field Regional Airport and to the newer housing developments around the lake, as well as Spring Creek Park. For over a month, the drivers across the bridge have been constrained to a narrow lane each way barricaded on the left and right by concrete barriers. Crossing the bridge without grazing your vehicles’ paint is akin to navigating an obstacle course on the popular Nintendo game called Mario Kart.
The City denied the bridge construction has anything to do with its $40 million sewer project that also spans across Lake Nasworthy a good distance south of the bridge.
The bridge is maintained by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). Spokeswoman for the San Angelo TxDOT region Karen Threlkeld confirmed the workers had walked off the job. She did not provide further details. The $3.7 million bridge project is contracted by TxDOT to Talbran Enterprises in Frisco or Prosper, depending on the business listing, The Google listing for Talbran indicates the company is “temporarily closed.” When we called the contractor’s main number mid-morning on Friday, it went to a personal voicemail.
TxDOT did not tell us what the plans are for re-starting the bridge project. Until then, drivers may want to practice for driving across the barricaded lanes of the bridge by playing Mario Kart at home.
