Proposed Salary Increases for County Elected Officials on the Agenda for Tuesday

SAN ANGELO – Tom Green County Commissioners Tuesday morning will consider any proposed raises for the 27 County elected officials as part of the yearly statutory budgeting process.  

State law requires the Commissioners Court to publicly consider any proposed increases to salaries for elected officials per government code 152.013. 

The elected officials include the County Judge, Commissioners, Sheriff, District Judges, District Clerk, Court at Law Judges, Justices of the Peace, Constables, District Attorneys, County Attorney, County Clerk, Treasurer and Tax Assessor. 

Texas law allows for the County Judge and Commissioners Court to set the annual county budget including salaries and compensation for all elected officials.  Since those officials are elected directly by the people, they also create and submit annual spending plans to the Commissioners Court.  The Court held budget hearings in early July where each department was given the opportunity to present their budgetary needs for the upcoming fiscal year. 

State law allows any elected official who is not satisfied with the salary the County Judge and Commissioners Court presents to file a salary grievance and request a public hearing before a committee made up of other elected officials and citizens.  

Tuesday's meeting starts the legal process for elected officials to grieve their proposed salaries.  

The Tom Green County Commissioners Court meets at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday morning in the Commissioners Court Meeting Room on the second floor of the Keyes building downtown.  That administrative court hearing is open to the public but anyone wishing to provide testimony must fill out a witness testimony form and present it to the court.
