Lightning Sparks Grass Fire Near Wall

WALL, TX — Two grass fires ignited by lightning on Susan Peak Road were brought under control Thursday night after firefighters from multiple agencies responded, the Wall Volunteer Fire Department said. 

Wall VFD units were dispatched about 6:45 p.m. Thursday to a smoke investigation on Susan Peak Road after a lightning strike was witnessed from the department’s Station 1. Crews arrived to find an active grass fire and requested assistance from the Texas A&M Forest Service and Dove Creek Volunteer Fire Department. 

While firefighters worked the first blaze, San Angelo Dispatch notified the incident commander of a second grass fire farther down Susan Peak Road. After assessing the new fire, additional units were sent. Goodfellow Fire and Emergency Services was then requested for mutual aid. 

A coordinated effort by all agencies brought both fires under control. No injuries or threatened structures were reported in the department’s account. 

Volunteers planned to return Friday to monitor conditions during peak hours. The department thanked firefighters, agencies, landowners, and others who assisted.
