DETAILS: Week 3 of High School Football Brings Great Match-ups

SAN ANGELO- Week 3 of high school football is here and there are some really good games that are going to be played tonight.

SAN ANGELO CENTRAL (1-1) VS. ABILENE COOPER (0-2)

Last week, the Bobcats got their first win over El Paso Montwood. Quarterback Tyler Hill went off and had himself a game along with the rushing attack that had over 375 yards and five touchdowns. Abilene Cooper has had some success through the air, but it hasn’t always turned into points as they could only muster 13 points per game so far in the season. But the quarterback has thrown for 434 yards. Cooper wide receivers Cam Herron and Avante Ralston have a combined 345 of those yards but only one touchdown between the two of them. On the ground, Cooper only has 101 yards on the season. Look for Central’s offense to come out ready to play.

MIDLAND LEGACY (1-1) VS. ABILENE (1-1)

Last week, Abilene High beat Abilene Cooper 14-10. This week, they get Midland Legacy who has Marcos Davila at quarterback, and he’s been on fire. While he’s got 444 yards passing, he’s thrown six touchdowns and one interception. On the ground, Zeke Luna has nearly 300 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Receivers Brex Stevens and Deonta Sonnier have been Davila’s big play receivers as they have 260 combined. Junior pass catcher Colin Brazzell and sophomore Aiden Serrano are young guys who make an impact. Abilene could be in for a rough week. Quarterbacks Dylan Slack and Brelon Badon have a combined 216 yards through the air and only one touchdown. The rushing and passing attack have not come together yet as the rushing leader on the team has 83 yards and one touchdown and the receiving leader has 6 catches for 66 yards and a touchdown.

LAKE VIEW (2-0) VS. VERNON (2-0)

Lake View has a decent chance to go 3-0 when they take on the Vernon Lions tonight at San Angelo Stadium. The Chief’s rushing attack is solid with lead back Ricky Ramirez rushing for 282 yards and four touchdowns. Junior back Ian Cortez also had nearly 200 yards on the ground and a couple of scores. Through the air, wide receiver Davahtian Manely is the go-to guy with 5 receptions, 89 yards, and a touchdown on the year. Vernon is also 2-0 so the Chiefs will have their hands full tonight. The Lake View secondary has 7 interceptions on the season with Michael Duran leading the way with four. Edge player and wide receiver Andru Rivera leads the defense with 2 sacks. This is a game to watch as this is also Lake View's homecoming.

WALL (1-1) VS. JIM NED (0-2)

There’s a lot going on at Wall tonight. First, the Hawks are squaring off against the Matt Fanning led Jim Ned Indians who are a different team than last season. Injuries have hampered the Indians this season with about 10 athletes out. Junior running back Brayden Shipman is leading the rushing attack with 35 carries for 182 yards and sophomore Grey Beasley has 109 yards and a score. Through the air, receiver Troy Doran has 8 catches for 97 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Grant Glidewell has gone 22/33 for 215 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions. Wall has a couple guys out as well but has found success on the ground with 755 yards and eight touchdowns with Garrett Guy leading the way with 252 yards and two touchdowns. Wall hasn’t had as much success through the air, but Luke Kemp does have 107 yards of their 156 total. Just enough to keep defenses honest. This is a huge game and both teams hate to lose. Also going on at this game, Wall is renaming its stadium after the late Clayton Weishuhn. Weishuhn played for the Hawks in high school, then for the Angelo State Rams for college. He was drafted in the third round by the New England Patriots and holds the record for most tackles in a season with 229. This will be the second stadium named for an NFL player, following Christoval’s Jack Pardee Stadium.

ELDORADO (1-1) VS. SONORA (1-1)

This is also one of the better games going on this week. Sonora is going into Coach Blake Weston’s second season and Hunter O’Bannon is a threat when he gets the ball, but the Eldorado defensive line is scary. Eldorado is coming off an overtime loss to the Winters Blizzards in a rain-delayed game. The Eagle offense will contend with Bronco defense led by linebacker Edgar DeLuna who had nearly 200 tackles last season. O”Bannon will team up with DeLuna to stop a young offense led by quarterback Jason Covarrubiaz.
