San Angelo Man Sentenced to Six Years Probation After Stabbing Box of Snacks

A San Angelo man, who admitted to stealing a box of Tom’s brand snacks and stabbing them in the Wing Stop parking lot, was sentenced to six years probation and a $1,500 fine on Thursday morning in Judge Weatherby’s 340th District Court.

Robert Gomez, 37, pled guilty to aggravated robbery in the snack incident, during which he threatened the victim and witnesses with a knife.

According to a complaint filed by an SAPD detective, Gomez was walking home from Valley View Blvd on March 27, when he came upon a truck in the parking lot at 3556 Knickerbocker Road. A witness then observed Gomez approach the truck and remove the box of snacks and continue traversing the parking lot with the box in his possession.

The victim of the crime was alerted to the theft and exited the eatery with the witness and others to address Gomez. After being told to stop, Gomez set the box down and began rifling through a backpack, and as the party of witnesses and victim approached, Gomez allegedly yelled that he had a bomb.

As the innocents backed up, Gomez began walking again, the complaint states, but as the victim once again called for Gomez to halt, at which point Gomez brandished a knife and screamed, “You don’t want to mess with this mother ******”, the complaint says.

According to the complaint, the victim reported that Gomez then began attacking the snacks with the knife. Once officers arrived on scene, Gomez waived his rights and admitted to the crime, stating that he was upset at his boss and had taken his anger out on the victim and witnesses.

In his statement, Gomez said he had been throwing the box in the air and kicking it across the lot when the victim and witnesses approached and claimed to own the property. He admitted to cutting up the snacks and stated that he had threatened the party while holding the knife.

Gomez was jailed on March 27 and held for a $500 surety bond. He has an extensive criminal history in Tom Green County, including numerous possession and marijuana charges, contempt of court, disorderly conduct and criminal mischief.

Aggravated robbery is a first-degree felony punishable by 5-99 years imprisonment and an optional $10k fine.
