SAPD Chief Carter: We are Better Than This

SAN ANGELO, TX – San Angelo Police Chief Frank Carter reacted to the violent riots occurring around the nation.

Here is his statement:

The First Amendment affords everyone the right to gather peacefully. It also gives us the opportunity to come together as one, every race, gender, nationality, age, religion, to unite and become stronger. To stand for a cause and have our voices heard.

As officers, we know we have bad employees in our profession, there are bad employees in all professions, it’s our job to recognize those employees and have them removed. Good officers don’t condone bad behavior, in fact they become more infuriated than a citizen. You ask why? We have spent years changing the culture and building community relationships. Officers want the best for their community, they are mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, aunts and uncles just like everyone us. A tragic and unjust incident like George Floyd sets our relationships back and we are left dealing with the consequences.

I want the citizens of San Angelo to know, you have some of the best officers and civilians in the nation serving you. I also know we have some of the best citizens in the nation who support law enforcement. We have worked hard over many years to build those relationship together.

I have seen the chaos around the nation, I know San Angelo is better. I believe a protestor who starts peacefully and begins looting, damaging property and injuring innocent people, you have crossed that line the First Amendment affords us, you are now participating in criminal activity. I further believe in doing so, you have lost sight of the intent of the protest and your actions dilute the cause.

I ask that we all come together as one this evening like San Angelo has many times in the past and have a peaceful protest. Let our voice be heard for George Floyd and his family. Together we can change, together we can make San Angelo better.

God Bless

That is true. There will always be idiots trying to take advantage and instigate trouble. I guess we wait and see...

I guess the San Angelo Police is not enforcing social distancing anymore . Just yesterday i witnessed kids on Sherwood harassed and threatened for simply hanging out and not "Social Distancing" .....Profiling at its finest !!!
