Black Activist Group Calls for Midland Police Chief to be Fired

MIDLAND, TX – The City of Midland held a community conversation Thursday night to get citizens comments on the arrest video that went viral last week. During the meeting a black activist group, Next Generation Action Network, from Dallas came and joined the conversation and called for the chief to be fired. 

As previously reported, on May 23, officers with the Midland Police Department arrested Tye Anders after he failed to stop during a traffic stop and resisted arrest. During the arrest multiple officers had guns drawn. Tons of backlash came from the incident and the arrest went viral. 

Later that week the Midland Police Department released body cam footage of the arrest. Here is the video:

After releasing the video Midland's District 2 City Councilman John Norman called for the community conversation. 

According to CBS 7, on May 27, the conversation started with a Q&A which a majority of the questions were to Midland Police Chief Seth Herman about the arrest. One question was if he would have handled the situation differently. 

“Myself and some of the senior troops, we would have done something different,” Herman said. “It wouldn’t have looked as good. It would’ve been very fast. It probably would’ve ended up with a broken window and somebody pulled out of a car and arrested and transported immediately. It would not have looked as professional as the men and women who were there that day, and showed extreme patience.”

After this the crowd began irritated and yelling ensued. "The victim wasn't Tye Anders the victim was his grandmother," said Dominique Alexander of the Next Generation Action Network. "What we need to do is get rid of that police chief. That's the first conversation we need to have." 

“The problem that we have is that there were multiple officers with guns drawn on an individual that didn’t have any weapons,” one Midland woman said. “That had his hands up. Was on the ground, crying and pleading out of fear. How is that you guys protecting the citizens that you swore an oath to?”

“I’m not going off just what happens in Midland, Texas,” Herman responded. “I have to go off of what’s going on throughout the United States. Officers die everyday from ambush situations...”

Herman was then drown-out by cries of “So do black people” from the audience.

This is when the crowd really exploded and the conversation was put to an end. 

It is unclear if there will be another conversation held in the future.

...if the young man would have pulled over when the lights started flashing and the siren's sounded grandmother wouldn't have been involved. The way he was screaming/freaking out as well as not pulling over would have led me to believe he was under the influence or hiding something. The way grandmother "fainted" I can see where Tye get's his theatrics from.
In other news. I appreciate Chief Herman not beating around the bush and just tell it like he see's it. lol Good or bad for him, only time will tell.

That's one way to look at it, a very fatalistic way if the options are looked at carefully. I'm not sure that the successful and very successful men and women of African-American descent would agree. The school principal, the Air Force general, the attorney, the teacher, the firefighter, etc., are receiving disrespect from this statement and it smacks of a national conspiracy among Americans of European descent, intentional or not. I personally do not know anyone who has had the time or energy to participate in a conspiracy of this sort.

Oh, the successful Air Force general has been offended by my free speech and oppressed by my opinions. I see.

May he break free from these invisible fetters that bind him despite all accomplishment he may garner while I examine myself deeply to extricate myself from the Great White Conspiracy at work. To my chagrin, I did not realize that I had such a monumental influence over generals, doctors, teachers, and firefighters.

Oh heaven, help me use my powers for good and not for teh evilness!!!1!1!

If your black, white or in between follow the damn rules and you won’t be in this situation. If you run a stop sign pull over take your ticket, fight it in the courts. If your handcuffed don’t resist and a white officer won’t have to restrain you. To this day if a black officer shot a white criminal there would not be anyone throwing a fit, protesting or damaging property just a good job for protecting your life and many others. Black people just think the white are out to get them, if there not happy in this country move!
