The Flag on Memorial Day

SAN ANGELO, TX — Ever since I could remember, the Mayfield Paper Company’s flag was always a sight to see. Mayfield Paper is located at 1115 Hill Street near downtown San Angelo.

On Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend, I decided to make a pit stop to capture Old Glory.

While I dearly appreciate your attempt to commemorate the meaning of Memorial Day, you seem to have missed the sacred solemnity of this HOLY day with your wish for a "happy" Memorial Day.

Memorial Day is a date on which we are to quietly remember, as though in the serenity of a cemetery or a house of worship the ultimate and precious price paid by those who gave their lives for our freedom and country.

Imagine walking up the widow or surviving children or parent(s) of a fallen service member at the funeral and wishing them a HAPPY BURIAL!!! THAT is what your salutation is like, and exactly why it is, in my humble opinion, completely inappropriate.

Please, in the future, truly THINK before you speak (or type) your greetings, titling, and introductions or closure of any Memorial Day tributes.

Those nearest to the fallen will in that manner be better consoled.

Thank you.
John Bariou

Great job Manny Diaz. Your message was received. I would have liked to see the letter Mr. Bariou sent to the various businesses around town having Memorial Day sales. Imagine, profiting from folks who gave all on the battlefield.

Please RE-read the first phrase of the very first sentence of my original post. It appears you missed it in seizing an opportunity to assume something not addressed in my actual posting.

My comment was directed to the author of the article, presumably a professional journalist who should have a better grasp of the English language and a vocabulary suitable for its application; as well as a knowledge of our national holidays and their dedications. Simply, it was an opportunity for his educational benefit.

I sent no letter to those businesses to which you refer. I simply don't patronize them during those promotions.

Good day, sir.

Mr. John Bariou, I'd like to start by saying thank you for watching my video and reading the article. As a journalist of over 10 years, I've been to many Memorial Day ceremonies, and have heard plenty of proud veterans of our Armed Forces as well as family members of the deceased that have proudly defended our nation use the term, 'Happy Memorial Day.' I'm not sure what your motive is in attacking a video that's promoting the honor of our nation's fallen? As a native of West Texas, I've grown up having passed by Mayfield Paper Company and viewing the beautiful American flag on display. If this is all you can see in this video/article then shame on you. Best, MD

Manny,
Please read again the very first statement of my original post.
I truly DO appreciate your video production.
The intent, now apparently widely misinterpreted as to point out that although widespread, the expressing "HAPPY Memorial Day" to the remembrance of those who died gaining and/or protecting our way of life.
Yes, even Presidents have mistakenly used that expression on what SHOULD be a solemn occasion which was NEVER intended to be a "celebration" with happiness and partying, but was established as a day of gratitude and respect. "Happy" is simply a poor choice of words.
I should ask, have you personally lost a family member or close friend in the service of our country? If not, then I encourage you to talk to someone who has, or at least try - truly TRY - to put yourself in their shoes and understand the inappropriateness of wishing a "Happy Memorial Day". For them, this HOLY day is something supremely sacred and those insensitive words HURT, rather than console.

That is all that I will post on this topic.
As a staffer/contributor with this website you are free to DELETE these comments if you feel it is appropriate since it has become argumentative.
To quote Benjamin Franklin: "A man convinced against his will is of the same conviction still."
I can see my input is falling upon deaf ears.

Respectfully,
John Bariou
USAF Veteran of the Cold War - Yes, the enemy tried to kill me - I could have been one to be remembered on Memorial Day. I'm sure my family would NOT have been "happy".

My momma told me that I had one day to mourn her death and the next day I had to get up and go about my business. The purpose of Memorial Day isn't to awaken the dead who are gone, but to remind us as a nation that many of our countrymen died so that some can vote for Democrats, even though right now that's a really bad idea. Nonetheless, if you want to "chickenhawk" my guy Manny Diaz over your Cold Warrioring, I'll see your a Cold War (on alert) and three hot wars, plus a dad who died Cold Warrioring. Memorial Day was actually borne out of placing flowers on the graves of Civil War vets. Some say the ladies in South Carolina started it, They were former Confederates. Others say ladies in the North started it. They were Union. I think the Union argument holds more truth. The date was chosen so that flowers were blooming up north. I don't know if it's all "happy" necessarily, but if I were a dead Cold Warrior or Confederate or Union solider, I'd rather have cheerful ladies rather than sad ladies placing flowers on my grave. But that's just me. Happy Memorial Day! Joe Hyde

“I have to wish you all a very happy Memorial Day,” Trump said. “On this Memorial Day evening in the United States, Americans are concluding a sacred day of remembrance, reflection and prayer.”

Democrats huh? Well no Democrat EVER sided with a ruthless dictator like the North Korean Chairman over a former VP. No Democrat ever sought the help from a hostile foreign government, like Russia. No President from the Democratic Party ever made millions while in office or installed his family in government. The Democrats are just as corrupt as the Republicans, but at least the Dems would never risk the collapse of our democracy or shred the checks and balances set forth in the Constitution. For shame!

you didn't watch the Kavanaugh hearings and your demoncrats lie lie lie and not tell the truth and act vile as anyone has every witnessed. And criminal.
