Aubrey DeCordova Gavels Last Meeting Closed After 12 Years on the Commissioners Court

SAN ANGELO, TX -- Three term Tom Green County Commissioner Aubrey DeCordova cast his last vote Tuesday after spending 12 years on the court.  

In an otherwise uneventful regular Commissioners' Court meeting, County Judge Steve Floyd presided as usual until the final three items.  Floyd then appointed DeCordova as Judge pro tem and allowed the Pct. 2 Commissioner to gavel closed his final meeting.

Pct. 2 Commissioner DeCordova was sworn in on Jan. 1, 2007 and announced a year ago he would not seek reelection. He served three four-year terms representing the southeast quadrant of Tom Green County.  DeCordova said serving as Commissioner was the highest honor of his career and told those in attendance he would miss them.

County Commissioners in Texas are responsible for implementing State Law at the county level.  Commissioners' courts oversee elections, provide funding for District Courts and the Sheriff’s Office and Jail, oversee county roads and bridges and parks, and manage the County Clerk’s duties including keeping official records including birth and death certificates, marriage and divorce decrees, real estate deeds, vehicle registration and property tax collection.  

Commissioner DeCordova was instrumental in construction of the Stephens Central Library downtown, the renovation of the County's Keyes Building, construction of the new County Jail and renovation of the current Michael Brown Justice Center, purchase and renovation of the 3020 N. Bryant facility, and many paving projects including the paving of Door Key Road and development of several subdivisions.  

DeCordova was also involved in the San Angelo Parental Rights Organization, SAPRO, which successfully removed controversial San Angelo ISD Superintendent Dr. Joe Gonzales in 2001.  

The 77-year-old Commissioner retired from GTE/Verizon and has been active in Texas Republican politics for decades.  Aubrey DeCordova is married to Cheryl DeCordova, who is Republican State Representative Drew Darby’s District Director.

San Angeloan Sammy Farmer won the March 2018 Republican Primary and was unopposed in the Nov. 2018 general election.  Farmer will be sworn in Tuesday, Jan. 1 at 2 p.m. in the Commissioners Court meeting room on the second floor of the Keyes Building, 113 W. Beauregard.
