CHRISTOVAL, TX— The Christoval Cougars edged out the Eldorado Eagles 39-30 to claim a share of the district championship. With Christoval's win, there was a three-way tie for first place between Christoval, Eldorado and Miles.
The game was very tight in the first as both teams both scored on their first drives and made big defensive plays.
The Cougars started the game with the score 7-0 on their first drive.
Eldorado answered fast with six plays form Eric Reyes for 44 yards. It was later capped off by Edgar Muniz with a 4-yard Touchdown.
Christoval started the second quarter just as they did in the first with a Touchdown by Brayden Wilcox with a 3-yard touchdown run.
After a couple of defensive possessions by both teams, the Cougars were forced to punt on their own 40-yard line. The Eagles tackled the punter which gave them great field possession.
This great field position turned into a 19-yard touchdown pass from Korbin Covarrubiaz to Jaakan Jurecek.
That put Eldorado up 16-14 at the half.
The Cougars came out out the half strong by scoring on their first drive. Wilcox ran 13 yards for another touchdown.
"We told out boys at half time that you have to make a choice, and we chose to be district champions," said Christoval head coach Casey Otho
The majority of the third quarter was defense with punts on every other drive.
To start the fourth quarter, Wilcox ran 39 yards for his third touchdown of the night.
This put Christoval up 28-16, but the Eagles never gave up.
Just when it looked like the Cougars were pulling away, Covarrubiaz threw his second touchdown of the night to Jurecek.
Then Christoval's David Fava fumbled for the Cougars and the Eagles got the ball in Christoval territory.
Unfortunately, Eldorado had three penalties on that drive which made it 1st and 45. This was too much ground to get for the Eagles.
The first play after the turnover on downs, Wilcox broke off a 70-yard run for his fourth touchdown.
The Cougars finished their scoring with a field goal to give them the winning margin.
Based on tiebreakers, Eldorado will still be the one-seed for District 8-2A Division II. They will play Haskell in the Bi-District round.
Christoval will be the two-seed and play Cross Plains next Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Roscoe.
"I'm as confident as everyone else on this team is," Otho said. "We got a lot of fight in us, and we're going to keep making history."
Miles will be the three-seed from 8-2A DII.

How about the three play each other again and the winner goes on if coach Barnett was coaching now wow he could get into playoffs even easier now then back in old days 1988 to 1993?

PermalinkCoach Barnett sure could your right. I thought the did a coin flip to see who was first. I think it takes away some now that 3 teams go to playoffs, there is y’all of expanding to 4 teams going too, it dilutes the competition in my opinion.
