Ector, Midland County Commissioners About to Vote Themselves Raises

SAN ANGELO,TX -- Midland County Commissioners have proposed a budget that includes a nine percent raise for commissioners while Ector County Commissioners could get an eight percent raise next year if they adopt their budget as presented.

Tom Green County Commissioners rejected a proposal for a ten percent raise back in July.  

According to reports, the proposed budget for fiscal year 2018-19 for Midland County calls for commissioners to receive a 9 percent raise. That means the same commissioner whose base salary was $47,176 in 2010, according to a 2011 Reporter-Telegram report, will make $69,083.45. Commissioners’ base salary currently is $63,379.31, according to information provided by Midland County.

Midland County Commissioners also get a $10,300 annual travel allowance and $60-a-year longevity pay based on years of service. They also could elect to receive an $80-per-month cell phone allowance. That computes to a possible $80,343 compensation package (not including insurance) for a first-year commissioner.

Earlier this month, Ector County Commissioners set the bar on increasing their own pay by voting to give themselves an 8 percent pay increase. They also approved an 8 percent pay raise for their employees, compared to the 4 percent Midland County commissioners are set to approve.

According to the Texas Association of Counties, Tom Green County Commissioners are paid $49,476 with a car allowance of $11,259 for total compensation of $60,735

The current budget proposal includes a three percent raise for elected officials which would set the commissioner’s salary at $50,960.28.  If Ford wins his grievance, his salary would be $54,423.60 plus the car allowance for total compensation of $65,682.60.

Tom Green County Commissioners have the final public hearing on the proposed budget and tax rate Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m. in the Commissioner’s Court room on the second floor of the Keyes building downtown.  The meeting is open to the public.
