Summer 2018 on Miserable Record Pace as Temperatures Hold Over 100

SAN ANGELO, TX-- It’s going to be hot throughout the Concho Valley this weekend, very hot.

While August is typically referred to as the "dog days of summer," this whole summer has felt like the dog days.

The National Weather Service has put the entire Concho Valley and most of the Big Country under a heat advisory of some kind through Friday.

Temperatures are expected to hit highs around 108 degrees in some areas with heat indices likely over the 110 mark.

Those living along or to the north of a line from southern Irion County to southern McCulloch County have been placed under an excessive heat warning and can expect high temperatures above 105 degrees.

Everywhere south of that line has been placed under a heat advisory. Forecast temperatures from 103 to 105 degrees in that area prompted the heat advisory by the NWS.

The 15-day forecast by the Weather Channel shows no relief from the heat in the near future with 100-degree days well into next week.

Last night, the NWS in San Angelo tweeted out how many 100-degree days Abilene and San Angelo have had.

For San Angelo, there have been 29 days with temperatures of 100 degrees or more while Abilene has seen 14 days of 100 degrees or more.

The average for 100-degree days is 18 in San Angelo and 12 in Abilene. The NWS also compared those numbers to the 52 days of 100-degree weather in San Angelo and 38 days in Abilene.

If the 15-day forecast holds true, that means San Angelo would be at 44 days of 100-degree weather as August begin.

With this abnormally hot weather, the NWS wants to remind residents about heat safety with these tips:

  • NEVER leave children or pets unattended in a closed vehicle.
  • Try to stay indoors and limit your exposure to the heat.
  • Drink plenty of water. Avoid caffeine and alcohol.
  • Take frequent breaks if working or playing outdoors.
  • Try to find air-conditioned spaces to go.
