Citizen Pursues Fleeing Hit-and-Run Driver with Handgun

SAN ANGELO, TX — The driver of a black passenger car ran a stoplight at N. Chadbourne St. and 19th St., crashed into a pickup, and then fled the scene with citizen witnesses in pursuit, one with a handgun.

That’s what San Angelo police are investigating Saturday morning.

According to SAPD Traffic Investigator and Officer Christopher Schneider, the driver and passenger in the pickup were injured and San Angelo EMS rendered aid. Their pickup was slammed into by a red light-running driver of a passenger sedan, police said.

Police learned from several witnesses that the sedan driver ran the stoplight and then got out of the car and ran. One citizen pulled a handgun, ordering the fleeing driver to stop. No gunfire was exchanged, however, and the fleeing driver was able to slip away.

Police later found the fleeing driver hiding in a nearby retail store, acting like nothing happened. He was arrested and booked into the Tom Green County Jail for Failure to Stop and Render Aid. Police said he had no driver’s license, either. All he could produce was a state identification card. He was cited for driving with no license and a third charge for running the red light.

The crash victims in the pickup were not critically injured, police said. The crash happened at around 9 a.m.

As the investigation of the Chadbourne hit-and-run crash was ongoing, San Angelo police were also investigating a near-fatal motorcycle crash on Mockingbird just off Sherwood Way. The motorcycle rider wasn’t wearing a helmet and suffered a skull fracture. Then, a third crash happened at Knickerbocker Rd. at S. Bryant, closing several lanes of traffic.

The crash on Bryant at Knickerbocker Rd.:

I know people are getting pissed off with the hit and run drivers, but who did the 'citizen' think he was, Magnum??

At least he did something instead of posting the incident to "instagram", or just sitting there watching, soaking up details of the incident to talk about with all his friends at San Angelo Live. We need more people like him. I find it hard to believe that we live in the same reality MjNS... There's a hit and run incident and all you can think about is how to make fun of the guy who wanted to do something about it? "Who do you think you are, Michelle Wolf?" It's sad that is the kind of support you give this "citizen".

What do you think this is, the wild west? Leave it to law enforcement! If he had discharged his weapon and killed someone, would you be singing the same tune?
Waiting to see how you can bring Jesus into the discussion....

Would you all still be crying and feeling sorry for him.
And cussing a good samaritan that tried to stop him. SMH
