Multi-Vehicle Crash on San Angelo's Houston-Harte at Howard St.

Investigating San Angelo Police Officer Korby Kennedy said that the morning blinding sun may have been a factor in this morning's multiple vehicle pile-up on the Houston-Harte Expressway. Initial reports on the scene are that the 2004(ish) black Toyota Tundra hit the tan/gold Chevrolet SUV, setting off a chain reaction involving approximately five or six vehicles. The 911 call was received at 8:20 a.m.

It was one crash that set off a chain reaction of multiple smaller crashes. Kennedy said that the investigation will take "several hours."

No serious injuries were reported. Two were transported to the hospital with minor injuries, police said. They were high school kids. police said.

We will update this story when the results of the investigation are in.

Update 10:41 a.m.

Police have stated that they were dispatched to a rollover crash at 7:43 a.m.  A gold Toyota Highlander operated by 17-year-old Kristen Hinshaw was east bound in the 2900 block of Houston Harte Expwy. A black Toyota Tundra operated by 17-year-old Tim Cheng was behind the Highlander.

The Highlander had slowed significantly due to traffic and the poor visibility due to the morning sun. The driver of the Tundra stated that he did not see the Highlander, due to poor visibility, and attempted to avoid a collision and slammed on his brakes.

The Tundra struck the Highlander causing the Highlander to leave the roadway and roll over one time. The Tundra then collided with the left rear of a Gray Dodge pickup operated by 42-year-old Stephen Gartmen.

No injuries were reported in the gray Dodge. Both drivers of the Tundra and Highlander were transported to Shannon ER with non-incapacitating injuries. The driver of the Tundra was cited for failure to control speed.

PURELY an assumption... but I use the loop, daily, to travel to work... I can't tell you how many teenagers I've seen, texting or facebook or WHATEVER (while at a high rate of speed) trying to get to school, or work, or ... who cares where they're going? It's young, inexperienced drivers who are putting the lives of EVERYONE at risk with their damned cell phones! PUT THEM AWAY! Parents - step up and get some sort of program that disables their ability to use these devices behind the wheel of a vehicle. Deadly accidents are so preventable sometimes...
I drive 64-65 on the Loop using cruise control. When someone tailgates, the only thing that might change is I slow down a bit so the drooling, slope-browed, proto-human tailgating me will pass; sometimes they lift a middle finger to signal their IQ score. Drive with assumption the other driver is suicidal idiot and you will never be disappointed.

You know what I enjoy doing? Driving in the left lane. I can't tell you how many ignorant individuals have sped past me at 70-85 miles an hour. I LOVE to set my cruise to 65, and travel in the left lane. I don't see myself as an obstruction - I see myself as a good samaritan, simply looking out for the well being of all those around me!
Here's a thought . How many of you out there would like to see the city provide pull over spots on our streets for cell phone use when car is in motion and outlaw driving while talking on any had held device. A review of the number of traffic accidents while cell phones are in use should be reviewed . Let's hear from San Angelo on this one. The next accident could be you!

I am ALL FOR outlawing cell use while driving (EVERYWHERE!) Not just in a school zone. I'm glad it's in place in school zones - but why should our children be the only people protected?? Why can't anyone step up and help protect me?? And screw "pull over" spots... NO ONE will use them - and you know that.
