Three New Mosaics Added Along the Concho River

SAN ANGELO, TEXAS -- Wednesday morning, Art in Uncommon Places (AIUP) placed three new fish mosaics at The Bosque on the Concho river.

The mosaic's are being displayed under the patio area of the Twisted Root: Burger Company on 333 S Chadbourne St.

Joy Thomas and Julie Raymond run the Art in Uncommon Places art studio and have worked on other projects, like the Red Arroyo trail and the river walk art collection.

"We want to give back to San Angelo with [these] pieces of art," Thomas said. "Most of the mosaic's along the river are from Art in Uncommon Places."

The three fish added along the wall grow larger in scale from one end to the other. The first one, placed yesterday morning, was the smallest of the three. After 3 p.m., two of the three mosaics had been placed.

The Bosque acts as a canvas for AIUP to make the area along the river a welcoming place for all in San Angelo.

"Art in Uncommon Places has made [the river walk] look beautiful," Lori Francks, co-owner of Twisted Root, said. "It just makes it more fun and more colorful for people to come and enjoy."

The group also plans to hang curtains under the S Chadbourne St. bridge so people can project movies onto them.

"We are blessed with the number of volunteer groups [that help us]," Thomas said. Thomas was also appreciative of the inmates from the Tom Green County Jail who helped with placing the mosaics yesterday.

AIUP is 501(c)(3) Non-Profit founded by Raymond and Thomas, both retired art teachers with a vision for public art. Since starting in 2006, they have collaborated with local artists, volunteer organizations, businesses, city officials, and community members to produce and donate over 100 art features throughout San Angelo and the Concho Valley.
