SAN ANGELO, TX — The much anticipated street improvement project for Bell Street in San Angelo has been delayed. According to the City’s website, “This project has been delayed so the City can correct some right-of-way issues discovered during the design phase.” City Public Information Officer Anthony Wilson indicated that the right-of-ways are a small hurdle, but he stressed that the Bell Street Project will move forward, but there are no signs of road construction on Bell St. yet.
Phase 1 of the Bell Street project is the demolition and reconstruction of the roadway from S. Concho Dr. to Harris Ave. The bidding time frame is currently scheduled to occur between June and August 2017, with construction slated to begin in September of this year. Phase 1's completion is still estimated to be in Feb. 2019.
Phase 2 of the Bell Street project is from Harris Ave. to Houston Harte Expy. Construction on Phase 2 is currently scheduled for the following timeframe: May 2018 until June 2019. Phase 3 rebuilds the roadway from Houston Harte Expressway to the Old Ballinger Highway. The final phase of construction is scheduled occur between November. 2018 to January 2020.
In the north-central part of San Angelo, contractors have finished the first phase of reconstruction on Martin Luther King Boulevard this week. Assistant City engineer Lance Overstreet said, “Replacement of the water and sewer utility lines is complete.”
Reece Albert, Inc. is now preparing to replace the roadway. Overstreet said the project is still on time. “They’ll start replacing the roadway where a portion of MLK's pavement will be replaced all the way to the base. Other parts will just be re-paved.”
A sidewalk will be added to MLK Boulevard from Houston Harte Expy. to 29th St. Overstreet says the MLK project should be completed by June 2018.

In other road construction news, Tom Green County Road and Bridge crews are rebuilding a one-mile stretch of Knickerbocker Rd. between Lagoon Lane and Paisano Lane in the Dove Creek area. Tom Green County Commissioner Pct. 4 Bill Ford said they are replacing about 20 percent of the 10-mile road between Twin Buttes Dam and the unincorporated town of Knickerbocker; "We're rebuilding the road, adding base and widening the pavement to make it safer." This construction project should be completed later this summer.

I just wish they'd blade the asphalt off Bell street until it can be repaired..... The under surface road bed would be much better to drive on than what's there currently. I hit a bump last week that jerked the wheel out of my hand and threw my truck into the oncoming lane of traffic. Fortunately nobody was coming for a head on collision........ When that happens to someone else and injury or death does occur, I hope the city has about 50 million set aside to make the award because they knew it has been a hazardous road and have let it progress to it's current condition by years of neglect.
