SAN ANGELO, TX - This afternoon, the unveiling of the San Angelo Crime Stoppers sign took place at the Red Arroyo Trail in the parking lot on Sul Ross St.
Many hours of hard work and dedication went into helping fund and create the signs. A total of six signs will be placed throughout the Red Arroyo Trail.
The signs are being placed as a public service for the community. In hopes that people see the signs, the San Angelo Crime Stoppers want to make the public aware of their services and show how much they care about the community.
Many people gathered today to welcome the new sign to the Red Arroyo Trail.
Linda Ashton, Crime Stoppers President, thanked city workers who put up the signs in quick time. She also thanked volunteers, board members and donors.
“We’ve all been working on this to help make the public aware of Crime Stoppers and how it works,” Ashton said during her thank you speech. “We’re also out here to help preserve the art work that is along the Red Arroyo Trail, and we really want to thank you.”
Giving a little definition of what the sign is aimed to do, Ashton explained, “Crime Stoppers wants to get the word out about what we are doing in the community and how we want to help.”
As stated, the sign unveiled today is the first of the six to be planted on the Red Arroyo Trail. The sign contains the Crime Stoppers number and website for individuals to use as a reference. Below is a map that has red circles indicating the six places that the signs will be.
Ashton noted, “It is important to let the community know that Crime Stoppers is a way to get involved with the community and help protect it, but also remain anonymous at the same time.”
Chief Frank Carter also came to show his support and attended the sign unveiling. He also said the sign posting could have never taken place without the help from the board, volunteers, community and donors.
“[Crime Stoppers] are [a] very important part of the [police] department in solving crime,” Carter said. “We will still be around. Crime doesn't pay. Without the community’s eyes and ears, it is difficult for us to solve crimes.”
Carter concluded, “[Crime Stoppers] are a very important piece of our department and we’re here to make sure it continues. I just want to thank everybody.”

I doubt if the majority of criminals in this town can even read. Most of them are so strung out on drugs it wouldn't register anyway. I doubt that a sign will ever deter a crime, unless it is on the side of a vehicle door and reads 'Police'. I guess it can't hurt, after all, it did give someone a job.
