AUSTIN, TX — The Sonora boys golf team held on to win the state championship Tuesday after the second and final round of the UIL state tournament was rained out.
With rain in the forecast, teams knew that Monday’s first round could end up being the only round.
Sonora took care of business as the first-day leader, and its score stood up when Mother Nature took over.
Sonora’s first-round score of 314 was three shots ahead of Lipan and Corsicana Mildred in the race for the Class 2A team title.
Sonora was led by Weston Fisher, who finished in fourth place with a 71. The rest of the Broncos’ scores included Dylan Ford (73), Juan Castillo (83), Jayden Welborn (87) and Christian Martinez (93).
In addition to Sonora repeating as the 2A champion, Goldthwaite’s Walt Thompson also defended his individual title after shooting a 68 on Monday, which was one shot ahead of Centerville’s Ty Chrisman.
At the 1A state tournament, Robert Lee finished in fifth place with a score of 366.
Wildorado won the team title with a 337, followed by D’Hanis (347), Abbott (352) and May (362).
Robert Lee was led by Brenner Sherwood, who tied for 12th with an 83. Other scores for the Steers included Jaxon Tavarez (93), Denver O’Dell (94), Max Garcia (96) and Levi Bailey (104).
Irion County’s Seth Sanford was fourth place in the individual standings after shooting a 78.
Texline’s Bo Bradley and Wildorado’s Hunter Corman tied for the individual title with a score of 74.
In 5A, Prosper Walnut Grove was the team champ with Frisco Wakeland’s Luke Colton claiming the individual title.
In 6A, Austin Westlake won the team title, and Conroe Grand Oaks’ Asher Vargas was the individual champ.
At the 3A tournament, the first-round leader, Wall, is looking to finish off its run at a state title. Conditions were good enough at Jimmy Clay Golf Course in Austin for play to continue Tuesday.
