AUSTIN, TX — Gov. Greg Abbott signed Senate Bill 14 into law Wednesday, establishing the Texas Regulatory Efficiency Office within the governor’s office to streamline state rulemaking and reduce regulatory burdens.
The legislation, inspired by the federal Department of Government Efficiency created under President Donald Trump, aims to help agencies identify unnecessary regulations and improve coordination across state entities.
SB 14 passed the Texas Senate in March and cleared the House on April 9. Abbott held a ceremonial bill signing Wednesday. You can watch it by clicking here.
The new office will focus on:
-
Identifying inefficiencies in the rule-making process;
-
Setting regulatory reduction goals;
-
Advising through a newly formed panel of business, public, and education stakeholders;
-
Publishing regulatory manuals and guides;
-
Improving public access to rule-related information through a searchable online platform.
Additionally, the office must submit a report every two years to the governor and the Legislative Budget Board, outlining its findings and recommendations.
Sen. Phil King, the bill’s author, said the office is designed to ensure regulations serve the public without imposing unnecessary burdens.
