NASHVILLE, TN — The Texas Longhorns survived with their season on the line again, this time in a 94-89 double overtime win over Texas A&M on Thursday in the SEC Tournament.
It was a classic game between the longtime rivals with nine ties and 17 lead changes.
Texas briefly started to pull away, but the Aggies erased a nine-point deficit with about eight minutes remaining to force overtime.
A&M had a chance to end the Longhorns’ season in the first OT, but the Aggies missed a running shot at the buzzer.
Texas regained control late in the second OT and knocked down its free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Texas was led by Tre Johnson with 20 points, while A&M was led by Wade Taylor with 29.
The Longhorns, seeded No. 13 out of 16 teams in the SEC Tournament, were a longshot to make the NCAA Tournament, but Thursday’s win over No. 5-seeded A&M may have saved their season.
Texas beat Vanderbilt 79-72 on Wednesday in its SEC tournament opener.
The Longhorns (19-14) move on to play No. 4 Tennessee at 2:30 p.m. Friday in the quarterfinals.
Despite its early exit in the SEC Tournament, A&M (22-10) is ranked No. 14 in the nation, and the Aggies project to be a No. 3 or 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament next week.
