Garden City Boys’ Playoff Run Ends in State Semifinals

LUBBOCK, TX — The Garden City boys basketball team’s memorable season ended Monday with a 60-37 loss to No. 20-ranked Valley in the Class 1A Division I state semifinals at Texas Tech’s United Supermarkets Arena.

The Bearkats were in the state semifinals for the second time in program history, joining the 2007 squad.

Garden City overcame a 5-11 start to the season and a third-place finish in district to win four playoff trophies, including a 40-38 victory over Water Valley for the Region II title last week.

The Bearkats finished with a 20-16 record.

Valley (34-3) will now meet No. 2 Perrin-Whitt (32-5) at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Alamodome in San Antonio for the state title.

It’s the first-ever state championship appearance for both teams.

Valley jumped out to a 21-8 lead by the end of the first quarter against Garden City, and the Patriots led 36-19 at halftime.

Valley’s lead grew to 48-28 by the end of the third quarter.
