David Hirschfeld, Prominent San Angelo Business Leader, Dies at 88

SAN ANGELO, TX — David Louis Hirschfeld, a longtime business leader and philanthropist, died on Friday, Feb. 28, 2025, at the age of 88, according to an obituary published by Harper Funeral Home and Crematory.

Hirschfeld, a San Angelo native, was the former president of Hirschfeld Steel, which he helped expand into one of the largest structural steel fabricators in the United States. Under his leadership, the company played a role in major infrastructure projects, including bridges, stadiums, and industrial developments.

Beyond his business contributions, Hirschfeld was known for his philanthropy and community service. He and his late wife, Judith, established the Judith & David Hirschfeld Adoption Center at Concho Valley PAWS and worked with Angelo State University to create the David L. Hirschfeld School of Engineering. His contributions also earned him numerous awards, including the United Way’s Pioneer of the Year Award, the Distinguished Citizen Award from the San Angelo Chamber of Commerce, and Texas Tech University’s Distinguished Engineer Award.

A lifelong member of First Methodist Church, Hirschfeld was active in Bible studies and community outreach efforts. He was involved in restoring the Hirschfeld Chapel at his family’s ranch in Fort McKavett, which now serves as a gathering place for veterans and worshippers.

Hirschfeld is survived by his children, grandchildren, and extended family members. A Celebration of Life service is scheduled for Saturday, March 8, at 10 a.m. at First Methodist Church in San Angelo.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Concho Valley PAWS, First Methodist Church Music Ministry, or the ASU Foundation’s Hirschfeld Department of Engineering Endowment.
