ASU Music Professor to Perform Classic Italian Songs in Free Recital

SAN ANGELO, TX - Dr. Mark Covey of the Angelo State University music faculty will present a solo voice recital of Early Italian arias on Thursday, Feb. 6, at 7 p.m. in the Carr Education-Fine Arts (EFA) Building, 2602 Dena Drive.

Titled "Arie Antiche (Ancient Airs)," the concert will take place in the EFA Building's Eldon Black Recital Hall and is free and open to the public.

A bass-baritone vocalist, Covey will be accompanied on piano by Dr. Eun Mi Lee, ASU staff accompanist. The musical program will include arias by various Italian composers, including:

  • Giulio Romolo Caccini
  • Antonio Caldara
  • Umberto Giordano
  • Giovanni Battista Pergolesi
  • Several others

"These songs have become a central part of vocal study for young singers," Covey said. "They are beautiful and simple, yet challenging."

A native of Monterrey, Mexico, Covey joined the ASU music faculty in 2021. He has performed with the Opera Company of Middlebury in Vermont, Opera Las Vegas, Opera San Antonio and Texas Hill Country Opera, as well as throughout the U.S., Germany, France and Italy. He has been described as "a real virtuoso" by Opera Today. Also an accomplished classical guitarist, he released a solo album, "Glory of Guitar," in 2017.
