SAN ANGELO, TX — The Angelo State University women's basketball team overcame a late 12-point deficit to defeat Eastern New Mexico, 61-59, when Madeline Stephens hit a game-winning shot at the buzzer on Saturday at the Junell Center.
It was the 10th straight win for the Rambelles, who improved to 12-3 overall and 8-1 in Lone Star Conference play. Eastern New Mexico fell to 11-4, 6-3.
Trailing by 12 points with seven minutes remaining, the Belles rallied to take their first lead of the game on a free throw by Addy Burns with 39 seconds to play.
After Eastern tied the game on a 3-pointer by Julieta Ceja, Stephens took an inbounds pass with 2.7 seconds remaining and drove to the basket for the game-winning layup.
Stephens, a senior forward from Lubbock Monterey, finished with a game-high 16 points. Keniah Williams had 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Majik Esquivel and Burns each had 10 points.
Eastern New Mexico led 20-4 after the first quarter before the Belles’ big comeback.
ASU will play again when it hosts Midwestern State at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 16.
