Trump’s Gulf of Mexico Renaming Plan Draws Sarcasm from Mexican Pres, Texas Gov

AUSTIN, TX — President-elect Donald Trump’s proposal to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America has drawn reactions from Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Texas Governor Greg Abbott.

Sheinbaum, Mexico’s first female president, responded on Wednesday by jokingly suggesting that North America be renamed “América Mexicana,” referencing an 1814 document predating Mexico’s constitution.

“That sounds nice, no?” she said, adding that the Gulf has carried its current name since 1607.

Gov. Abbott joined in with his suggestion, sharing a social media post labeling the waterway the “Gulf of Texas.”

“If we are going to rename things … this is the move,” Abbott wrote.
