Weekend Event Lineup Changes, Delays and Cancellations

If you had a Christmas-packed weekend planned, you might need to rethink that. Due to inclement weather that blew in last night, many of the city’s holiday events have been cancelled for Friday and Saturday, and others have had significant lineup changes.

Among those closing their doors this weekend is the Museum of Fine Arts, who announced Friday that they’ll be cancelling both sessions of Mistletoe Magic, a child-centered photo session with Santa and arts and crafts occasion that had been scheduled for Saturday.

A benefit concert that was scheduled to run Friday at Sierra Vista United Methodist Church has also been cancelled. The event was to feature 6-year-old Stephen Wesley Hale II, an accomplished Filipino-Americano piano player. Sierra Vista will be rescheduling the event, which is a fundraiser for the typhoon victims in the Philippines.

Some of the bigger weekend events, such as the Christmas Parade and the Tree Lighting Ceremony have also been cancelled entirely due to bad weather and driving conditions expected during the early evening events. And Saturday morning Pancakes with Santa hosted by the Lions Club has also been cancelled.

The weekend will not be a complete loss, however. For those wishing to get out and experience the seasonal cheer, Christmas at Fort Concho will still be taking place, albeit with a slightly altered schedule.

“Right now one of the two main events that we are hosting is Christmas at Old Fort Concho. We’ve had to make some changes to that event due to the weather, but most of the events will be taking place on Saturday and all of them will be taking place on Sunday,” says City of San Angelo Public Information Officer Anthony Wilson.

Those changes to Saturday’s lineup include shifting the opening to 11:00 a.m. cancelling all of the Fort Concho Calvary’s parade ground activities during Christmas at Fort Concho out of concern for the horses and riders.

“We value the safety of our volunteers and our guests,” Fort Concho Manager Bob Bluthardt said, and while many hardy souls are already camped on the Parade Ground and ready to host visitors, “it is clear that road conditions will become treacherous when we would have guests on site.”

This is the first time in 32 years that a whole day has been cancelled at the event.

The City will also be hosting the symphony’s Christmas Fiesta concert, which is scheduled for Saturday night at the McNease Convention Center. And, the San Angelo Nature Center will be open for normal hours of operation on Saturday.

With the sun brightening up things up, the definitiveness of cancellations remains a bit foggy, however the current status reflects conditions this afternoon and anticipated iced roads Saturday morning.

“We’ll be updating as needed,” said Wilson. “We’re just re-emphasizing that everyone needs to be as safe as possible and make good decisions when driving this weekend.”
