Man Kills Father After Being Told to Get a Job, Deputies Say

BARTOW, FL - A Florida man who deputies say spent most of his time playing video games is accused of fatally shooting his father and critically injuring his mother after an argument about his unemployment.

Joseph David Voigt, 23, allegedly opened fire on his parents Saturday night at their home in Bartow after his father, Marvin Voigt, 63, asked him to find a job. Deputies said Marvin was found dead in the driveway, while Voigt’s 58-year-old mother survived the shooting and remains in critical but stable condition.

Voigt fled the scene but was arrested Sunday in Orlando after a traffic stop. According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, he admitted to the shootings, blaming his father’s repeated criticism of his gaming habits and lack of employment.

“This violent and dangerous suspect was quickly apprehended,” Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said. “Voigt will face the full consequences of his actions.”

Voigt, who has a criminal history including battery and discharging a firearm in a residential area, is being held at the Orange County Jail as he awaits extradition to face murder and attempted murder charges. The investigation is ongoing.
