LAS VEGAS, NV — Two San Angelo cowboys making their first-ever appearance at the National Finals Rodeo turned in strong performances in Thursday’s opening round at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.
Joel Harris had the second-fastest time of the night in tie-down roping at 7.7 seconds to earn $26,624.
The 22-year-old jumped from 13th place to 10th in the overall standings.
Dylan Hancock, last season’s Rookie of the Year, had the fifth-best time at 8.4 for $8,693 and remained in ninth place overall.
Another San Angelo competitor, Ty Harris, is making his sixth NFR appearance, and he entered the night in third place in the overall standings.
Harris failed to cash in his first run, however, tying for 10th with a time of 10.3, dropping him to fourth overall.
Defending champion Riley Webb had a 7.0 to move from fourth to second.
Overall leader Shad Mayfield had a 9.4 to finish out of the money in eighth place, but he’s still about $37,000 ahead of the pack.
The 10-round finals will continue with Round 2 on Friday.
