CANYON, TX — The Angelo State volleyball team defeated West Texas A&M in Canyon on Saturday to win the Lone Star Conference Tournament title.
The Rambelles bounced back from dropping the first set for a 25-27, 27-25, 25-19, 25-22 win.
It was a matchup of the top two teams in the conference — and two of the top 10 teams in the nation — but WT had the home-court advantage, and “The Box” has a longtime reputation as a difficult place to play.
ASU was swept when it played there earlier this season.
No. 10-ranked ASU overcame all of that Saturday to beat the No. 5 Lady Buffs in a match that could have significant implications for the upcoming NCAA Division II regional tournament.
ASU won two of its three meetings with WT this season, and the Rambelles (28-2) could replace the Lady Buffs (25-4) as the top team in the region when the tournament field is announced Monday.
ASU is currently in the No. 3 spot, but it’s no guarantee the Belles will move past No. 2 Metro State-Denver (27-2), which swept through its conference tournament without dropping a set.
ASU was led Saturday by Madi Parrish, who had 18 kills. Evelyn Torres had 16 kills and Demi Carter had 14 kills.
Adeline Orton directed the offense with 51 assists, along with 19 digs on defense.
Caleigh Enax had 25 digs, and Sydney Thornton had nine blocks and nine kills.
