COMANCHE, TX — In a matchup of Top 10 teams, Zephyr was still no match for Richland Springs.
The No. 2-ranked Coyotes rolled to a 64-6 win over No. 10 Zephyr on Friday in a Class 1A Division II area-round playoff game in Comanche.
Richland Springs (12-0) will now face No. 3 Oglesby (10-2) in a rematch of last year's state semifinal that Oglesby won 62-48.
"It's going to be another good game. Maybe we won't fumble on the 1 three times again," Richland Springs head coach Shawn Rogers said with a laugh about last year's meeting.
Zephyr's season ended with a record of 10-2.
Richland Springs was led by Billy Perry and Cohen Ethridge, who each had three touchdown runs. Hutton Rogers added another TD run, and Gage Behrens recovered a fumble in the end zone.
Zephyr's Chayden Woodcock scored his team's lone TD. It was only the seventh TD Richland Springs has allowed this year.
Richland Springs is chasing its 10th state title and first since 2019.
The Coyotes had a bye in the first round of the playoffs due to a forfeit from Calvert, and they also had a district game cancelled via forfeit.
"We haven't gotten in any groove, and it's just monotonous in practice. It's hard to keep them motivated in practice. This is what they want to play in," Rogers said.
