BIG LAKE, TX — Reagan County High School senior Kason Brown committed this week to play football for Texas State University in San Marcos.
Brown had received offers from five NCAA Division I schools, including UTEP, Tulsa, New Mexico and Cornell.
Brown said he also went on a visit to UTEP in El Paso, but he knew he found his next home when he visited Texas State.
“It’s really just everything I was looking for,” Brown said. “They’ve already had a lot of success in the program. And that atmosphere they’ve got over there, it’s incredible. They’ve got a ton of support.”
Texas State is an up-and-coming program that made headlines with a win over Baylor last year during an 8-5 season that ended with a win over Rice in the First Responder Bowl.
The Bobcats are 6-4 this season and narrowly lost to Arizona State in a game broadcast on ESPN.
Brown, a 6-foot-4, 185-pound athlete, said he’s projected to play at safety for Texas State, though it’s possible he could be moved to receiver.
He said safety is his preferred spot to play, though he was one of the area’s top quarterbacks last season.
“I didn’t really enjoy playing quarterback that much. It’s a lot on you back there,” Brown said. “Safety is my favorite position to play. You don’t really have to think. You can just go play.”
Brown helped Reagan County to a 9-2 record this season and the program’s first district title since 1993.
The Owls lost in the first round of the playoffs to Cisco.
“It was just great being out there playing with the guys and having success like that. We’ve never really been successful in football, so it was good to go out on that note,” Brown said.
Brown is also one of the best basketball players in West Texas. He averaged 24.9 points per game last season as a junior and eclipsed the 2,000-point total for his career.
Brown said basketball was his first love, and he’s looking forward to one last season with Reagan County before leaving the sport behind in college.
