Angelo State Rams Make Case to Selection Committee With Blowout Win

SAN ANGELO, TX — The Angelo State University football team needed more than a win Saturday against West Texas A&M.

The Rams had to state their case that they’re one of the top teams in the region.

After an emphatic 56-19 victory — ASU’s ninth win in a row — the Rams will now await their playoff fate, which will be revealed at 5 p.m. Sunday during the NCAA Division II Selection Show on ncaa.com.

ASU entered the day at No. 4 in the Super Region 4 rankings, and the No. 2-4 seeds will earn a home playoff game.

A victory wasn’t enough to guarantee that, however, because No. 5 Western Colorado won 37-7 over No. 9 Colorado Mesa earlier in the day, putting the pressure on the Rams.

ASU responded in a big way, and the Rams could do more than hold on to the No. 4 seed. They could potentially jump up to No. 2 after losses Saturday by No. 2 Augustana and No. 3 Minnesota State-Mankato.

Leading 35-19 at halftime, ASU faced a critical moment with West Texas A&M receiving the second-half kickoff.

The Rams’ defense needed a stop, and they got even more than that when Andrew Pitts intercepted his sixth pass of the season and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown.

The game was never in question again.

ASU quarterback Braeden Fuller delivered a spectacular performance with 187 rushing yards and three TDs, along with 238 passing yards and four TDs.

The Rams are 9-2 overall and completed a perfect 9-0 run through the Lone Star Conference. WT’s season ended with a record of 5-6.
