SAN ANGELO, TX — As expected, it was an absolute battle for the Region I-1A volleyball title Saturday between longtime district rivals Bronte and Water Valley.
The two teams went back and forth in a five-setter before Bronte pulled away late for a 25-23, 19-25, 25-16, 18-25, 15-8 win at San Angelo Central’s Babe Didrikson Gym.
No. 3-ranked Bronte (30-11) advances to play No. 1 Harrold next week in the state semifinals at a site and time to be determined. Only the state finals will be held in Garland this year.
Harrold ended Bronte’s season last year in the state semifinals with a four-set win before losing to eventual state champion Blum.
No. 8 Round Top-Carmine and No. 4 Neches will play in the other state semifinal.
No. 5 Water Valley’s season ended with a record of 34-7. It was the third time the Lady Cats lost to Bronte, though they narrowed the gap each time.
On Saturday, Water Valley responded each time after falling down a set by winning the next set.
The Lady Cats then jumped out to an early lead in the fifth set, but Bronte showed its poise down the stretch and finished with a big run for the win.
